Bhubaneswar, Apr 1 (KNN) Creating an ecosystem conducive to the functioning of Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs) and cottage industries is as important as facilitating large scale industries in giving a fillip to entrepreneurship, said Vice President of India.

The Indian Micro, Small & Medium Enterprise (MSME) sector is massive. There are more than 60 million MSMEs in the country. The sector contributes 30 per cent to the country’s GDP and employs over 100 million people. And yet, often it is declined formal credit that helps keep businesses up and running.

The potential of the apparel and textile sector of Chattogram was discussed at the press conference by RedCarpet365, which was held on March 30, 2019, at the Chattogram Press Club. The forum was held on the occasion of BIGTEX, Bangladesh International Garment & Textile Machinery expo 2019, to be held from April 4-6, 2019, at the GEC convention centre. 

A scheme that offers rebate on all taxes at the central and state levels to the exporters of apparel and made-ups is likely to be extended to all categories of textile exports as an alternative to the MEIS scheme that must be withdrawn under WTO rules.

The government is considering a scheme to refund taxes imposed on India’s exports to the US that will suffer loss of competitiveness once the concessional duties enjoyed under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) are withdrawn.
