The Centre will revise the base year for calculating the consumer price index (CPI) for agricultural and rural labourers next year — a move that will have an impact on the wages of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (MNREGS) workers.

The Labour and Employment Ministry on Thursday revised the base year of the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) from 2001 to 2016 to reflect the changing consumption pattern, giving more weightage to spending on health, education, recreation and other miscellaneous expenses, while reducing the weight of food and beverages. 

In a bid to integrate export ecosystem with the wider domestic economy, the government may allow manufacturers who make goods for domestic supplies to operate within the special economic zones (SEZs), official sources said.
