Rachna Shah, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles and Rajeev Saxena, the Joint Secretary, met with representatives of the Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) to talk about important concerns facing the sector.
In a memorandum, TEA requested assistance for a number of demands, such as the creation of an IIT in Tirupur, the adoption of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0, the expansion of the Interest Equalisation Scheme (IES), and the city’s connection to the Coimbatore Metro Rail.
TEA used a video presentation to demonstrate its sustainable initiatives during the conference, which included Zero Liquid Discharge, green energy generation, and programs in recycling, healthcare, and education.
K.M. Subramanian, President of TEA, reported a 13 per cent increase in August’s exports of ready-made clothing and a 17.5 per cent increase in July 2024 shipments of knitwear. He underlined that Tirupur hopes to reach a turnover of US $ 11.9 billion by 2030, guided by the vision of Honorary Chairman A. Sakthivel. This goal is supported by the company’s present accomplishments of US $ 4.1 billion in exports and US $ 3.5 billion in domestic operations.
The organisation asked for help in establishing a Tirupur Knitwear Pavilion for Bharat Tex 2025, as well as support in branding Tirupur as “Green Tirupur.” Both requests were made to the Textile Ministry. Shah commended Tirupur for its sustainability initiatives and gave the assurance that the Ministry is cognisant of the difficulties facing the sector, particularly those pertaining to the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS). On 25th October, there will be a special outreach campaign to address these concerns.
The meeting also covered increasing Tirupur’s manufacture of garments made of man-made fibres in order to become more competitive on the international market.
