he cotton yarn price drop has been welcomed by Tamil Nadu’s textile industry and the Tiruppur Exporters’ Association expects a revival of international orders if the downward trend continues.

As cotton yarn prices dropped by Rs 40 per kilogram, manufacturers in Tamil Nadu’s garment hub Tiruppur are beginning to regain hope after months of skyrocketing prices, ET Bureau reported. The price per cotton candy of 356 kilograms has been dropping recently which has led to a drop in yarn prices.

On July 2, the price of 40s-count cotton yarn was revised to Rs 394 per kilogram, down from Rs 434 per kilogram, TNN reported. However, despite the price drop, 40s-count cotton yarn is still trading far higher than its price of Rs 237 per kilogram in May, 2021, before the price hikes.

“The industry has been talking about yarn piece hike for the last 18 months,” said the Tiruppur Exporters’ Association’s president Raja M Shanmugham, TNN reported. “The revised price came into effect amid trying times. We expect it to come down further. The trend will pave [the] way for international orders.”

However, despite welcoming the price drop, Shanmugham opined that further price reductions are needed for any tangible improvements. “Textile manufacturers will not get more orders just because of the 40 dip,” said Shanmugham. “The downward trend must continue.”
