Vadodara: A businessman has registered a case of cheating worth Rs 1.2 crore against three persons including his partner with the detection of crime branch (DCB) on Friday.

Jayram Sevani, who has a shop of readymade garments in a shopping mall in Alkapuri, told the police that he was duped in a land deal he had made in 2007.

According to the police, Sevani wanted to buy a piece of agricultural land but as he wasn’t a farmer he couldn’t purchase the land. Sevani and his late elder brother Lekhraj then joined hands with a farmer, Girish Patel and decided to buy the land as partners. The deal was fixed at Rs 1.2 crore that was to be paid to land owner Praveen Patel and his other partners in the plot.

Sevani told the cops that he paid Rs 70.59 lakh by cash and Rs 50.2 lakh to the accused in cheques in September 2007.

He said that they even signed an agreement to sell the plot of land. But after two months, Praveen, Girish and Kalpesh Patel met Sevani and said that they want the payment in cash instead of cheques. Sevani then paid them Rs 50.2 lakh in cash.

Despite getting the payment, Praveen didn’t prepare the sale deed and kept delaying it on the pretext that the other partners in the land are abroad.

Sevani later learnt that Praveen, with the help of Girish, had allegedly sold off the same plot of land to some other persons.
