Tirupur: Six employees of a private knitwear unit at Devampalayam in Palangarai here were arrested from Avinashi on Wednesday for robbing several people at gunpoint.
The Tirupur rural police identified them as R Chandan Kumar, 22, Mustafa Anshari, 26 and A Chandan Kumar, 33, all from Vaishali district of Bihar, and Navalsha, 20, from Sitamarhi district of Bihar, Abi, 25, of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh and V Pradeep Kumar, 32, of Pandalur in the Nilgiris. Police seized two country-made guns, six bullets, a knife and stolen gold jewellery from them.
Five robberies, including three at gunpoint, were reported from Avinashi and Perumanallur police limits in the last one week. The robbers had snatched gold chains, cash and valuables, including mobile phones and purses.
In the latest incident, J Deenadayalan, 21, of Uthukuli was attacked by a four-member gun-wielding gang at Palangarai last Saturday. The robbers snatched his mobile phones and Rs 2,000 from him. They also attacked the man, causing severe injuries.Four special police teams were formed to nab the perpetrators. On Wednesday, a special team detained Chandan Kumar, Mustafa Anshari and Chandan Kumar during a vehicle inspection.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the trio was robbing people with the help of Navalsha, Abi and Pradeep Kumar. “They were working in a private knitwear unit in Devampalayam at Palangarai and were staying in the unit’s hostel facility,” a senior police officer said. “The four men from Bihar are the main accused in the cases. They thought it would be easy to rob commuters and get away since thousands of people from the northern states are working in Tirupur. They had bought the guns from Bihar.”
The accused were remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
