VANCOUVER – On the opening day of this year’s Textile Exchange sustainability conference, here in Vancouver, Canada, Finnish fibre innovator Spinnova is showcasing a newly developed textile fibre based on wheat straw.

The company has on display a mannequin dressed in a shirt, jacket and skirt produced using the sustainable textile fibre. It uses supplies of the material sourced within Finland which would otherwise be incinerated.

Spinnova has partnered with European energy firm Fortum to develop and ultimately fast-track the production of this material, said to be a first of its kind made from agricultural waste. “This was a very fast journey from the first trials to real, appealing fabric materials. This shows that wheat straw-based fibre is well on its way to being a drop-in product of the most sustainable kind,” the company’s CEO, Janne Poranen said.
