The Coimbatore District Mill Workers Union (AITUC) has sought an office of the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESI) at Annur area as thousands of workers reside there.
This was one of the resolutions passed at a meeting of the Union held here on Wednesday.
The Union also urged the Union Government to give up efforts to consolidate 44 labour welfare laws into four codes and to withdraw the rules related to fixed working hours. It should remove the salary cap to calculate bonus for workers. The Government should also take steps to make NTC mills profitable and pay the 2015 and 2016 bonus arrears to workers employed at NTC mills in the State. The State Government should ensure that non-permanent workers at NTC mills in Tamil Nadu get the minimum wages.
The Labour Department should ensure that workers who complete 480 working days in two years at a mill are made permanent workers. All categories of workers, except apprentice and permanent, should be removed from the standing orders. Women workers employed in textile mills in the State should have complete freedom on the premises of the mills and should not be employed under schemes such as Sumangali scheme.
The Union also demanded that migrant workers should be registered under the respective welfare boards and should get legal protection.
