Coimbatore: The strike by the Tirupur Power Table Owners’ Association demanding a charter of demands entered the fifth day on Sunday, bringing production of garments worth lakhs of rupees to a halt and leaving many jobless, though temporarily.
Pointing out that they had been stitching garments for a private company in Tirupur by employing hundreds of workers, Murugasen, joint secretary of the association, said, “The company settles just 65% of the bill amount at a time and it takes several months to pay the remaining amount. How is it possible for us to pay the workers and manage other expenditures with half the bill amount? We had escalated the issue several times, but to no avail.”
The central government levies 5% goods and service tax (GST) on all the job works. “How could we alter the GST? It is uniform for all the job works across the country,” he said.
