The Indian Texpreneuers Federation plans to write to Indian and international brands requesting them to source garments for the domestic market from the manufacturers in the apparel clusters in India.
A press release from Prabhu Dhamodharan, convenor of the Federation, says that there is a 53 % jump in exports from Bangladesh to India between July 2018 and April 2019. Most of the imports by India from Bangladesh are said to be ready-made garments. Western retailers having outlets in India and the local brands are sourcing more from Bangladesh. While the Union Government is promoting ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ programmes and is supporting brands and retail chains to establish business in the country, the local industry is hit by the increasing imports.
Sluggish demand
The industry is facing sluggish demand in the domestic market. Hence, the Federation has urged all the brands and retail chains to explore possibilities for partnerships with manufacturers in clusters such as Tiruppur, Karur, Erode, etc.
“In terms of pricing and quality, Indian clusters can serve better the needs of the Western and Indian brands compared to products sourced from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, or Indonesia,” the release says.
It is estimated that India could have lost garment business worth ₹7,500 corre to its neighbour - Bangladesh. In order to revive and support the domestic industry, the Federation plans to write to brands and try establishing parternships between the retailers and the manufacturers in the clusters, the release adds.
