Tirupur: From May 1, India Post will increase working hours of its ‘Business Post Centre (BPC)’ to suit timings of late evening despatches of industrial units in the city.
The postal department has made an appeal to the industrialists to utilize its various courier and parcel services. The department said it was taking steps to improve its service, especially to compete with pick-up and delivery services of private courier companies.
The department has recently conducted an orientation programme at Tirupur Exporters’ Association and informed the knitwear industrialists that it will increase working hours of the BPC from May 1. The centre would be receiving parcel and couriers between 9am and 9pm instead of 11am and 7pm. It will engage more manpower to the centre.
“We were getting feedback that our service was not up to the mark, especially in pickup and delivery of couriers. The industrial units prefer late despatches, and it was utilized by private courier companies. So, we have decided to increase the BPC’s working hours. The services including parcel, speed post and Aadhar card enrolment would be available at that time. We will consider increasing the working hours further, beyond 9pm, if it is required in future,” postal superintendent, India Post Tirupur division, S Gopinathan said.
“Now, our connectivity, by both rail and air, has been improved, so the department could pick up many couriers and parcels. We are also striving to improve foreign couriers. We have a unique advantage of on-desk custom clearance. Our service charge is cheaper any other private companies. Tirupur division was earning revenue of Rs 10 lakh averagely out of the courier services,” he added. Executive committee member of TEA R Senthil Kumar said, “While the private couriers companies’ weight slab would start from 500g, India Post’s weight slab is from 250g. So, the customers can save up to 25% of the courier costs.”
