COPENHAGEN - The consumption of textiles is Europe's fourth biggest cause of pressure on the environment after demand for food, housing and transport, according to a new report.

The European Environment Agency (EEA) says the consumption of clothing, footwear and household textiles in the EU uses about 1.3 tonnes of raw materials and more than 100 cubic metres of water per person each year.

The EEA says that a wide-scale change towards a circular economy in textiles production and consumption is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, resource use and pressure on nature.
