Vehicular movement in Mirpur comes to a halt while police was mediating the stand-off

Garment workers in the capital’s Mirpur have staged demonstrations for wages and bonus.

Around 200 to 300 workers and employees of several readymade garments factories in Mirpur 1, stayed away from their work, and took to the streets at the busy Sony Cinema Hall intersection at 5:00pm on Wednesday.

The agitating workers halted traffic movement in the area -- creating a huge tail back.

Demanding Eid bonuses and arrears, RMG workers also urged the government to take necessary steps to pay the holiday bonus as well.

On information, police rushed to the spot and took control of the situation.

Shah Ali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Salahuddin confirmed the incident to Dhaka Tribune and said that police officials have been mediating for the protesting worker’s demands and to help resolve the stand-off.

Reports quoting protesting workers said Eid bonus was supposed to be paid by the factory management on Wednesday.

However, the garment factory owners have failed to disburse bonuses on time.
