The garment manufacturing industry in Tiruppur is facing a shortage of workers as many North Indian labourers have left the area to work in other sates. Industry bodies such as the Tiruppur Exporters Association are looking for ways to halt the exodus. 

Following the opening of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, many workers in Tiruppur from Uttar Pradesh have returned to their home state, ET Bureau reported. Around 20% of the garment hub’s workers have left, according to the Tiruppur Exporters Association’s president K M Subramanian, and if this trend continues then production could suffer.

 

Many workers who were based in Tiruppur have moved to Noida which has been a boon to its local garment industry. Uttar Pradesh’s law and order situation has also improved which has made it more attractive to workers.

“We are not feeling the heat of shortage of labourers anymore,” said the Noida Apparel Export Cluster’s president Lalit Thrukal, the Economic Times reported. “The workers are returning and joining us… The apparel manufacturers from other states are coming to these areas to set up garment export units. So it will be easier for the workers to get jobs. It is also beneficial for the migrant workers from Bihar and Odisha as they are neighbouring states and travel time to homeland will be much less.”
